102 Beyond Nutrition: The Power of Nourishment in Midlife
We’ve been told to focus on “eating right”... counting calories, tracking macros, following the perfect plan. Nutrition matters, yes. But nourishment? Nourishment changes everything.
In this episode of Rooted in Presence, I explore how midlife calls us to move beyond food rules and into a deeper, kinder relationship with eating. As a dietitian for over 15 years, I know the science... but I'm also aware that food is about more than fuel.
It’s about care, pleasure, presence, and connection.
We’ll explore:
🌿 The difference between nutrition and nourishment
🌿 Why midlife is the perfect time to shift how we relate to food
🌿 My Eat 4 Peace method and how it helps you find calm with eating
🌿 Simple rituals to bring presence to your meals
🌿 Why pleasure, connection, and slowing down matter as much as protein and fibre
This isn’t about rules or rigidity, but finding a way of eating that truly supports you.

Do you ever find yourself wondering what you should be doing when it comes to your food and health? Maybe you've flitted from one plan to another, chasing the promise of the next quick fix, only to end up surrounded by broken promises and that nagging feeling that you just can't trust yourself around food and with so much information out there. Endless advice, conflicting rules is no wonder clarity feels out of reach. For In today's episode of Rooted in Presence, we're cutting through the noise. We'll explore how to stop outsourcing your self, trust, your diets, and start reconnecting with your own wisdom. This isn't about restriction or starting every Monday. It's about building a way of eating and living that actually fits you. So if you're ready to step away from the overwhelm and into something sustainable, let's dive in. When I tell people I'm a dietician, the conversation often turns to food rules. What's the best diet? How much protein do I need? Is this good or bad for me? And here's the thing. I value nutrition deeply. I've been a registered dietician for over 15 years, and I know that the science matters. It's what gives us structure, protects our health, and helps us build strong foundations as we age. But I've also seen the other side. I've seen how many women lose their joy and even trust in themselves by trying to follow the perfect diets, the constant calculations, the guilt, the shame of feeling like you've fallen off the wagon. So today I want to offer a different lens. Nutrition is important, but nourishment. Nourishment is essential. So let's start by honoring nutrition because it does matter. Protein protects our muscles and bones, especially through midlife. Fiber supports our digestion, our gut and hormone health. Healthy fats, calm, inflammation, nourish the brain, and structure to our neurotransmitters and our hormones. Vitamins and minerals keep all our inner systems running. So this knowledge empowers us. It gives us the science to support our bodies as well. It gives us choices. But nutrition alone, when reduced to numbers and checklists, it can become a trap. Did I hit my macros? Was that a good choice? Am I being healthy enough? So, yes, the science does give a structure. Structure without soul can be a light punishment. I dunno if you relate, and I'd love to know if you do, you can always reach out. I'd love to hear stories. So what can we get from nourishment? Well, here's where it can expand the picture. When nutrition asks what's on your plate, nourishment asks, what does this meal mean to you? It asks, how do I feel after this meal? Energized, grounded, or anxious? Does this food support not just my body, but my mood and my sleep? Does it carry connection with my family? My culture, seasons, memories, and does it allow for pleasure on the plate and not just function? So this is at the heart of my Eat for Peace method, creating meals that bring peace, not pressure. It's why I've shared it in past episodes and alongside my Mediterranean diet episodes too. So not there as a rigid plan, but as a way of eating that naturally blends nutrition and nourishment. Fresh, colorful foods, shared meals, olive oil, a bit of bread, maybe the odd glass of red wine with friends. Science truly meets soul here because food isn't just fuel, it's culture, it's connection, it's self-care. In midlife. Food takes on new importance. The hormones are shifting. Sleep changes. Emotional eating patterns can resurface even if you've had a really good handle on them for a while. And here's what I've seen. Food is a message to your nervous system too, because balanced meals stabilize blood glucose, which calms smooth swings. It can certainly support here. Warm grounding foods can soothe frazzled energy. So yes, comfort eating at times is okay. You can stop beating yourself up about it if this is something you struggle with. But of course there are other support strategies too. We're aiming for a balance here And eating slowly allows digestion to do its job. Something as simple as a pause before you eat can transform your experience. One deep breath and exhale. A sigh can help you transition from rushing to receiving. Sharing meals can multiply this effect. Human connection helps our nervous systems feel safe, whether it's with friends or family. But even if you're eating alone, you can still create ritual cooking for yourself with care, perhaps lighting a candle, or playing soft music, breathing before that first bite. Nourishment truly is presence on a plate. So what if we shifted this question from, am I being good to, am I being cared for? That doesn't mean abandoning nutrition. It means layering nourishment on top. So yes, aim for protein, but let it be in meals you enjoy. Yes, eat plenty of plants, but prepare them in ways that taste delicious. And yes, be mindful of sugar, but also allow celebration without guilt, without. This is the difference between a plan that controls you and a way of eating that supports you. It's a move from counting to caring, from punishments to presence, from food as a rule book to food as a ritual. So if you are a midlife listener, Let nourishment be about more than fueling your body. Let it be about feeding your whole life. Nutrition gives us the science, the structure, nourishment as the soul, the joy and the connection. So this week I invite you to notice not just what you eat, but how do your meals feel rushed and distracted, or do they feel like a gift to yourself? Because three times a day food offers us a chance to come home, not just to eat, but to feel nourished, not just to fuel, but to root into presence.
