Rooted In Presence

100 - Rooted in Presence: The Story Behind the Shift

Carly Killen Episode 100

Two years ago, I pressed record on the very first episode of this podcast. Back then, it was The Strong Bones Coach Podcast, a space dedicated to building stronger bodies and stronger bones. But as the conversations deepened, so did the calling.

This milestone episode marks the beginning of a new chapter: Rooted in Presence.

In today’s conversation, I share:
🌿 Why I started the podcast in the first place
🌿 The quiet nudge that told me it was time to change
🌿 The synchronicity of “RIP” and the question that’s shaped my life: What if this were my last decade?
🌿 What you can expect from Rooted in Presence as we move forward together

If you’ve been here since the beginning—thank you for walking this journey with me. And if you’re new here, welcome. You’ve arrived at a beautiful time.

Because this space isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about remembering yourself. Coming home. Rooted, steady, present.

Carly:

Hello and welcome to not the Strong Bones Coach Podcast, but rooted in presence. Yes, I have decided to change the title, the Purpose of this podcast, and it's been a long time coming. But like all good things, I didn't want to rush it. There has been quite a journey behind all this. So if you'd like to hear all about why the change, why now? Settle in and I have the story for you right here. So welcome to Rooted in Presence. Let's take a breath and let's dive right in. So let's start with why I started this podcast. It was two years ago, actually, two years ago this week. Couldn't have planned that if I tried, or perhaps I'd like to admit to having planned that perfectly, but that's just not the case. It's just landed super well. But two years ago. I pressed record on the very first episode of what was then the Strong Bones Coach Podcast. At the time, I was fresh from a season of recalibration. I'd been on a retreat, sin Iha. I gave myself permission to pause, and in that stillness, the idea of the podcast really landed with me. Maybe it had been brewing all along, but that trip gave me the courage to take the first step back then. My focus felt clear when it came to the podcast. I wanted to show women in midlife how to build stronger bodies, stronger bones. And why? Why does that matter? Because I've noticed that osteoporosis just isn't talked about enough. And even though one in two women over 50 will face this unless they can take positive action. Also because so much of what we struggle with later in our midlife can be our mobility, recovery, energy. It all links back to how strong our foundation is. But as I started, I discovered there was more to it than muscles and bones. I wanted this podcast to be a voice of reassurance in a very busy, noisy world. A reminder that you're not broken, not behind, and absolutely not alone. That version of me was saying, I know you're carrying a lot. You've got people depending on you, and I want you to have the resilience to keep creating memories, not just getting through your days. And that was the heart base of the podcast. Yes. We talked about strength training, nutrition, but underneath it all, the podcast was always about how to live fully in the body. You have right here, right now. Now two years on, it feels only natural that the space has evolved into rooted in presence. Because while strong bones matter, the deeper truth is a strong life is built when we stop outsourcing our worth and start living from presence. So why did I make the change? Why not just leave it as it is? It was doing a good job. Well, about six months in I started to feel that quiet nudge. There was more here. I love talking about bone health, strength, menopause health, and I still do, but I sense the podcast wanted to grow beyond the container. I had given it. So instead of chopping and changing, instead of feeling like I needed to change everything right now. Even though I'd realized it just wasn't quite the right thing, Something in me whispered, don't force it, just let it breathe. So I did. But instead of trying to fit a mold I created for myself. I began to follow what was alive in my own heart. I started sharing what was showing up in my conversations with clients, with friends, and in my own midlife journey, and I paid attention. Well, I noticed. Was that while strong bodies matter, what women are really longing for is a strong sense of self, a way to feel anchored in their values, their rhythms, their truth, even when life feels unpredictable. And that's where the deeper themes began to emerge. Nervous system wisdom, breath presence, self-trust in midlife, reclaiming your true voice and over time. The podcast became less about fixing and more about remembering less about doing it right and more about coming home. So that's when I knew it was time to rename time for the title to reflect what this space had really become. And so rooted in presence has now been birthed. So what does this new chapter mean for me? For us? Why Rooted in presence. For me, presence has become the heartbeat of everything I do. Presence is what steadies us when life feels chaotic. Well, for me at least, presence is what allows me to listen. Not just to my thoughts, but to my body, my own breath, accessing my own deeper knowing. And this is what I want for you to. So when we are rooted in our own presence, we stop living life as a performance. We stop abandoning ourselves for approval, productivity, or perfection, and instead we begin to move from more values, not pressure. We can honor our body signals instead of overriding them. We get to reclaim the pieces of ourselves that were exiled for survival, and we can find rhythm in midlife even when our routines might be collapsing. So for me, presence has been the bridge between surviving and truly living. It's what carried me through grief, through burnout, through the question, if this was my last decade, how would I live differently? And it's what I want to offer you here every week. Now those at you that spot patterns and can spell a little coincidence. There is also a little synchronicity here that I can't ignore. It is one of the reasons I chose the name when I realized that it had an acronym. The acronym, RIP. Usually this points us towards endings, rest in peace. But for me it became a reminder of how precious beginnings are. I'll tell you a little story and perhaps I'll record a, a bigger podcast on this one day. But when I turned 35, I realized I was exactly 10 years younger than my mum was when she received her terminal cancer diagnosis. And that moment hit me like a wave. I found myself wondering if my mom had known she'd only had a decade left, would she have lived differently? And naturally the questions turned inward. If this were my last decade, how would I live differently? The single question cracked something open. It shifted the way I moved through my days. It reminded me that presence isn't a luxury. It's the most honest way to live. So when I noticed that rooted in presence also spelt out RIP, it felt like a full circle resonance, not a death, but a return, not an ending. The invitation to the fully right here while we can. So what can you expect from this shift in the podcast? Well, my essence won't change. We'll still talk about bone health strength, menopause, nervous system regulation, breath work, and self leadership. The lens is shifting. Rather than asking, how can I fix myself, we'll be asking, how can I live more fully as myself? So you can expect more conversations that honor both science and soul practices to ground you in your body and your health. Reflections on midlife as a threshold, not a decline, and stories and tools that help you remember you already carry everything you need. So this podcast is no longer about just strong bones. It's about a strong rooted presence, a way of living that doesn't deny life's challenges, but meets them with steadiness, compassion and truth. So if you've been listening since the beginning, thank you. Truly, you've walked with me through the first cycles of this podcast and now into this next chapter. And if you're new here, welcome. You found us at a beautiful time as we step into a season of deeper honesty, gentleness, and reclamation. So wherever you are on your midlife path, I hope this space reminds you that you're not broken, you're not behind, and you're not too late. You're already whole and present is the way back to yourself. So if you're looking for an invitation to live with more truth, more ease, more you. In the right place. Welcome home.
